Walid Raad grapples with memories of loss and carnage, as well as the dizzying reconstruction, that are legacies of the Lebanese Civil War. In an attempt to make sense of it all, he conceived his singular, ongoing project The Atlas Group, an imaginary foundation-cum-collective that presents its research (with elements of performance, video, and photography, all produced by Raad) to audiences in Beirut and New York. For Raad, the line between fact and fiction is fluid: despite producing all the content himself, Raad attributes his exhibitions and lectures to imaginary individuals. Similarly, he imbued Secrets in the Open Sea (1996), a striking series of blue abstract photographs whose white borders contain thumbnail photographs, with a fictional narrative about finding the negatives in rubble and discovering they contain hidden images of men and woman who had been found dead in the Mediterranean Sea.
